Baclosign is a prescription medication containing baclofen, a centrally acting muscle relaxant and antispastic agent. It is specifically formulated to manage and alleviate symptoms associated with muscle spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and other neurological conditions. By targeting the nervous system, Baclosign helps reduce muscle stiffness, spasms, and pain, thereby improving mobility and daily function. This product card provides comprehensive information for healthcare professionals and patients to ensure safe and effective use.

Features

  • Active ingredient: Baclofen 10mg or 20mg per tablet
  • Form: Oral tablets, film-coated for ease of swallowing
  • Mechanism of action: GABA-B receptor agonist, inhibiting monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level
  • Prescription-only medication, requiring professional oversight
  • Manufactured under strict pharmaceutical quality control standards
  • Available in blister packs of 30 or 90 tablets for convenient dosing

Benefits

  • Reduces frequency and severity of muscle spasms, enabling improved comfort
  • Decreases muscle rigidity, facilitating enhanced range of motion and mobility
  • Alleviates associated pain and discomfort, contributing to better quality of life
  • Supports activities of daily living and rehabilitation efforts
  • May reduce complications such as contractures when used as part of a comprehensive management plan
  • Allows for individualized dosing to meet specific patient needs and response

Common use

Baclosign is primarily indicated for the management of spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis, particularly for the relief of flexor spasms and concomitant pain, clonus, and muscular rigidity. It may also be employed in the treatment of spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases. Patients typically experience a reduction in discomfort and an improvement in voluntary motor functions, making it easier to perform day-to-day tasks and participate in physical therapy.

Dosage and direction

Dosage must be individualized based on patient response and tolerance. The initial dose is usually 5mg administered three times daily. This may be increased gradually by 5mg increments every three days until the desired effect is achieved. The average maintenance dose ranges from 30mg to 80mg daily, divided into three or four doses. Doses exceeding 80mg daily are not recommended without careful assessment. Baclosign should be taken with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided; taper dosage gradually under medical supervision.

Precautions

  • Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures, as baclosign may lower seizure threshold.
  • Monitor renal function; dosage adjustment may be necessary in patients with impaired renal function.
  • Exercise care when operating machinery or driving, as baclosign may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
  • Not recommended for use in patients with stroke, cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s disease, as efficacy has not been established and risks may outweigh benefits.
  • Elderly patients may be more sensitive to effects; initiate therapy at lower doses.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to baclofen or any component of the formulation.
  • Avoid use in patients with significant gastrointestinal obstruction or ulceration.
  • Not for use in patients with psychosis or severe psychiatric disorders unless closely monitored.
  • Contraindicated in combination with other central nervous system depressants without careful risk-benefit assessment.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, and headache. Less frequently, patients may experience confusion, insomnia, hypotension, constipation, or urinary frequency. In rare cases, hallucinations, seizures, or severe allergic reactions may occur. Most side effects are dose-dependent and may diminish with continued use or dosage adjustment.

Drug interaction

Baclosign may potentiate effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids). Concurrent use with antihypertensive agents may increase risk of hypotension. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may enhance CNS effects. Use caution with medications that affect renal function. Always review the patient’s full medication list before prescribing.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, muscular hypotonia, drowsiness, coma, respiratory depression, and seizures. Management involves supportive measures and symptomatic treatment. There is no specific antidote; gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion was recent. Maintain airway and provide respiratory support if necessary.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15-30°C) in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
