Ciprodex Ophthalmic Solution: Dual-Action Relief for Eye Infections

Ciprodex Ophthalmic Solution is a prescription medication combining ciprofloxacin, a potent fluoroquinolone antibiotic, with dexamethasone, a powerful corticosteroid. This synergistic formulation is specifically engineered to treat bacterial infections of the eye while simultaneously controlling inflammation. It is indicated for conditions where both an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect are desired, providing comprehensive therapeutic management. Trusted by ophthalmologists, it offers a targeted approach to resolving ocular infections and reducing associated discomfort.

Features

  • Contains ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (0.3% as base) and dexamethasone (0.1%)
  • Sterile, preserved suspension for ophthalmic use only
  • Available in a 5 mL or 10 mL dropper bottle for precise dosing
  • White to off-white suspension that resettles upon shaking
  • pH approximately 5.0 to match ocular comfort
  • Store between 2°C to 25°C (36°F to 77°F)

Benefits

  • Effectively eradicates a broad spectrum of susceptible bacterial pathogens
  • Rapidly reduces inflammation, pain, and swelling associated with ocular infections
  • Minimizes risk of corneal damage and scarring due to uncontrolled inflammation
  • Convenient twice-daily dosing supports patient adherence
  • Helps achieve quicker symptomatic relief and shorter recovery times
  • Preserves visual acuity by addressing infection and inflammatory response concurrently

Common use

Ciprodex Ophthalmic Solution is commonly prescribed for bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis where inflammatory components are present. It is also used post-operatively in ocular surgery to prevent infection and manage inflammation. Its dual mechanism makes it suitable for cases where pure antibiotic therapy may be insufficient due to significant edema, hyperemia, or discomfort.

Dosage and direction

Shake the bottle well before each use. The typical dosage for adults and children 1 year of age and older is one to two drops instilled into the affected eye(s) every 12 hours for 7 days, or as directed by a healthcare professional. To administer, tilt the head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch, place the drops, and close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination.

Precautions

Do not wear contact lenses during treatment. If irritation, pain, or hypersensitivity occurs, discontinue use and consult a physician. Prolonged use may result in secondary infections, fungal overgrowth, or increased intraocular pressure. Use with caution in patients with a history of corneal perforation, viral or fungal infections of the eye, or those with known sensitivity to any component.

Contraindications

Ciprodex is contraindicated in patients with active viral infections of the cornea and conjunctiva (e.g., epithelial herpes simplex keratitis), vaccinia, varicella, or other mycobacterial or fungal diseases of the eye. It should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, other quinolones, dexamethasone, or any ingredient in the formulation.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include ocular irritation, burning, stinging, blurred vision, redness, itching, or foreign body sensation. Less frequently, corneal deposits, lid edema, conjunctival hyperemia, tearing, or photophobia may occur. Rare but serious side effects include corneal perforation, superinfection, or elevated intraocular pressure. Report any persistent or severe reactions to a healthcare provider.

Drug interaction

Concurrent use with other ocular products may alter absorption or efficacy. Avoid using other eye medications unless directed by a physician; allow at least 5 minutes between applications if multiple agents are prescribed. Systemic interactions are unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption, but inform your doctor of all medications you are using.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to limited absorption. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset or dizziness. Flush the eyes with sterile saline or water if excessive instillation occurs.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature between 2°C to 25°C (36°F to 77°F). Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed and protected from light. Discard any unused solution 28 days after opening. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
