Diarex is a clinically formulated antidiarrheal medication designed to provide rapid and effective relief from acute diarrhea and associated gastrointestinal discomfort. Its unique composition targets multiple pathways involved in diarrhea pathogenesis, ensuring comprehensive symptom management while supporting intestinal health. This product is suitable for adults and children over a specified age, with dosing adjusted to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Benefits
- Provides fast-acting relief from diarrhea, often within one hour of administration
- Reduces frequency and urgency of bowel movements, restoring normal daily activities
- Minimizes abdominal cramping and gas, improving overall comfort
- Helps maintain hydration and electrolyte balance, critical during diarrheal illness
- Supports gut flora recovery with complementary prebiotic agents in its formulation
- Prevents travel-related diarrhea when used prophylactically in at-risk situations
Common use
Diarex is commonly used for the management of acute, non-infectious diarrhea in adults and children above 6 years of age. It is also indicated for symptomatic relief in cases of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) and for reducing stool frequency in patients with ileostomies. Healthcare providers may recommend Diarex for managing diarrhea associated with certain medications or dietary changes. It should not be used when diarrhea is caused by bacterial or parasitic infections unless directed by a physician, as slowing motility can prolong exposure to pathogens.
Dosage and direction
For acute diarrhea in adults and children 12 years and older: The initial dose is 4 mg (two tablets), followed by 2 mg (one tablet) after each loose stool. Do not exceed 16 mg (eight tablets) in 24 hours.
For children aged 6–11 years: 1 mg after each loose stool; maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 mg.
Use for no more than 48 hours without consulting a healthcare provider.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, and may be taken with or without food. For prophylactic use against traveler’s diarrhea, take 2 tablets once daily throughout the risk period.
Precautions
- Do not use if you have a high fever or blood/mucus in stools.
- Avoid in patients with ulcerative colitis or antibiotic-associated colitis.
- Use with caution in patients with liver impairment; dosage adjustment may be necessary.
- Prolonged use may lead to dependency or tolerance; do not exceed recommended duration.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a physician.
- Keep out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to loperamide or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with abdominal pain without diarrhea.
- Children under 6 years of age.
- Those with conditions where constipation should be avoided (e.g., megacolon).
- Patients taking drugs that prolong QT interval or with known cardiac conditions.
Possible side effect
Common side effects may include constipation, dizziness, nausea, or dry mouth. Rare but serious side effects can include severe abdominal distension, allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling), or symptoms of toxic megacolon. Discontinue use and seek medical attention if irregular heartbeat, fainting, or severe bloating occurs.
Drug interaction
Diarex may interact with P-glycoprotein inhibitors (e.g., quinidine, ritonavir), increasing loperamide levels and risk of cardiac events. Concurrent use with other central nervous system depressants or anticholinergic drugs may enhance sedative effects. Avoid use with other antidiarrheals to prevent excessive constipation.
Missed dose
Since Diarex is taken as needed after loose stools, missing a dose is not applicable. Do not double up on doses; simply take the next dose after the subsequent unformed stool.
Overdose
Overdose may result in severe constipation, central nervous system depression, or cardiotoxicity (QT prolongation). Symptoms include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and urinary retention. In case of suspected overdose, seek emergency medical assistance immediately. Activated charcoal may be administered if ingestion was recent.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C) in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
Disclaimer
This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Always read the label and follow directions for use. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you have underlying medical conditions, are taking other medications, or if symptoms persist beyond 48 hours.
