Eurax is a topical medication containing the active ingredient crotamiton, specifically formulated to provide rapid and effective relief from severe pruritus (itching) and to eradicate scabies infestations. Trusted by dermatologists and healthcare professionals for decades, it offers a dual-action approach, combining antipruritic and scabicidal properties in a single, easy-to-apply formulation. Its efficacy is backed by a long history of clinical use, making it a first-line choice for managing these distressing dermatological conditions.

Features

  • Contains 10% w/w crotamiton as the active pharmaceutical ingredient
  • Available in a 100g tube or 500g bottle of cream or lotion formulation
  • Exhibits both antipruritic (anti-itching) and scabicidal (mite-killing) actions
  • Formulated for topical application only; not for ophthalmic, oral, or intravaginal use
  • Typically begins to relieve itching within minutes of application
  • Suitable for use in adults and children over 3 years of age, under medical supervision

Benefits

  • Provides rapid and targeted relief from intense, localized itching associated with various skin conditions.
  • Effectively eliminates Sarcoptes scabiei mites and their eggs, curing scabies infestations.
  • Soothes irritated skin, reducing the urge to scratch and helping to prevent secondary bacterial infections.
  • Offers a non-greasy, easy-to-apply formulation that is generally well-tolerated on the skin.
  • Can be used as directed for both temporary symptomatic relief and as a complete treatment course for scabies.
  • Supported by extensive clinical history and trusted within dermatological practice.

Common use

Eurax is primarily prescribed for the treatment of scabies, a contagious skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It is also widely used to relieve severe itching linked to various dermatoses, such as allergic reactions, eczema, pruritus ani, and pruritus vulvae. Its dual mechanism makes it particularly valuable in cases where itching is caused by or complicated by parasitic activity.

Dosage and direction

For scabies treatment:

  • Adults and children over 3 years: After a warm bath or shower, apply cream or lotion generously over the entire body from the chin down, paying particular attention to areas between fingers and toes, wrists, axillae, and genital regions. Avoid the face and scalp unless specifically directed by a physician.
  • Leave the application on for 24 hours, then take a second bath or shower and remove the medication.
  • A second application may be required 24–48 hours later if live mites are still present. Do not exceed two applications in a 24-hour period.

For relief of itching:

  • Apply a thin layer to affected areas and massage gently until absorbed. Repeat as necessary, but not more than 2–3 times daily.

Always follow the specific instructions provided by a healthcare professional or as detailed in the patient information leaflet.

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin.
  • Do not apply to acutely inflamed or exudative skin areas.
  • If irritation or hypersensitivity occurs, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to topical medications.
  • Do not cover treated areas with occlusive dressings unless advised by a physician.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to crotamiton or any excipients in the formulation.
  • Not recommended for infants under 3 years of age unless under strict medical supervision.
  • Should not be used on patients with known widespread secondary bacterial skin infections without concurrent antibiotic therapy.
  • Contraindicated in patients with acute pustular or bullous skin conditions.

Possible side effect

While generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience:

  • Localized skin irritation, including burning, stinging, or redness
  • Allergic contact dermatitis
  • Rash or urticaria at the application site
  • In rare cases, systemic allergic reactions

If severe or persistent side effects occur, discontinue use and seek medical advice.

Drug interaction

No significant drug interactions have been widely reported with topical crotamiton. However, patients using other topical medications (e.g., corticosteroids, retinoids) should consult a healthcare provider before simultaneous use to avoid potential irritation or reduced efficacy. Always inform your doctor of all medications you are using.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed during a scabies treatment regimen, apply it as soon as remembered, then continue with the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed application. For pruritus relief, apply when needed, adhering to the maximum daily frequency.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely but may increase the risk of local skin reactions such as severe irritation or redness. In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center. Symptoms of ingestion may include nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Keep the tube or bottle tightly closed and away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Discard any unused product after the treatment course is completed or by the expiration date printed on the packaging.
