Propecia, with the active ingredient finasteride, is a prescription medication specifically developed to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is the first and only FDA-approved pill that effectively treats hair loss on the vertex (top of the head) and anterior mid-scalp area in men. By targeting the root hormonal cause of hair loss, Propecia works to halt the progression of hair thinning and, for many men, stimulates regrowth, offering a scientifically-backed solution to a common concern.
Features
- Active Ingredient: Finasteride 1mg
- Drug Class: 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor
- Presentation: Film-coated tablets for oral administration
- FDA-approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss
- Requires a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider
Benefits
- Stops the progression of hair loss by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles.
- Promotes hair regrowth in a significant number of men, increasing hair count on the scalp.
- Provides a non-surgical, convenient, and discrete treatment option taken as a once-daily pill.
- Offers a long-term management strategy for androgenetic alopecia when treatment is continued.
- Clinically proven efficacy demonstrated in multiple large-scale, placebo-controlled studies over several years.
- Helps improve self-confidence and satisfaction with appearance by addressing a visible condition.
Common use
Propecia is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. It is used to increase hair growth and prevent further hair loss on the vertex (top of the head) and the anterior mid-scalp area. It is not intended for use by women or children. Results are typically seen after at least three months of daily use, and continued use is necessary to sustain benefits; ceasing treatment will lead to a reversal of effect within 12 months.
Dosage and direction
The recommended dosage is one 1mg tablet taken orally once a day, with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole. It may be taken at any time of day but should be taken at approximately the same time each day to maintain consistent drug levels in the bloodstream. Treatment with Propecia is a long-term commitment. Clinical studies show that the effect is generally maintained only as long as the medication is taken. A minimum of three months of daily dosing is required before evidence of hair growth or prevention of further hair loss can be observed.
Precautions
- Propecia is for use by adult men only. It must not be handled by women who are or may potentially be pregnant due to the risk of absorption and potential risk to a male fetus.
- Patients should be aware that they may experience a temporary increase in hair shedding at the beginning of treatment; this is often a sign that the medication is beginning to work and is typically followed by regrowth.
- Regular follow-up with a prescribing physician is advised to monitor progress and discuss any concerns.
- Patients with liver function impairment should use Propecia with caution, as the drug is metabolized extensively in the liver.
- A digital rectal examination (DRE) and other evaluations for prostate cancer should be considered in men prior to initiating therapy and periodically thereafter, as Propecia can lower PSA levels.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to finasteride or any other component of the formulation.
- Use in women, particularly those who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Finasteride can cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male fetus.
- Use in pediatric patients.
Possible side effect
Like all medications, Propecia can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following adverse reactions are based on clinical trial data and post-marketing experience. The most common side effects are related to sexual function:
- Decreased libido (sexual drive)
- Erectile dysfunction
- Decreased volume of ejaculate
- Breast tenderness and enlargement (gynecomastia)
- Allergic reactions, including rash, itching, hives, and swelling of the lips and face
- Depression
- In rare cases, persistent sexual dysfunction (e.g., erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders, decreased libido) has been reported to continue after discontinuation of treatment.
Drug interaction
Formal drug interaction studies have been performed. While no clinically important drug interactions have been identified, caution is advised when Propecia is used concomitantly with other medications that are extensively metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme system. However, due to finasteride’s limited effect on the cytochrome P450-linked drug metabolizing enzyme system, interactions with other drugs are not anticipated. Always inform your doctor of all prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, it should be skipped, and the next dose should be taken at the regular time the following day. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Maintaining the regular daily schedule is more important than catching up on a single missed dose.
Overdose
In clinical studies, doses of finasteride up to 400 mg/day have been administered without significant adverse effects. There have been no reports of overdose with Propecia (1mg finasteride). In the event of a suspected overdose, symptomatic and supportive care should be provided as appropriate. As finasteride is highly protein-bound, it is not expected to be dialyzable.
Storage
Store Propecia tablets at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep the medication in its original blister pack or container to protect it from light and moisture. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets. Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so.

Reviews
- “As a dermatologist, I have prescribed Propecia for over a decade. For the right candidate—a man with early-stage androgenetic alopecia—it remains the gold standard non-surgical treatment. The key is managing patient expectations regarding the timeline for results and the possibility of side effects.” – Dr. A. Sharma, MD
- “I’ve been on Propecia for 18 months. The first 4-5 months were frustrating with some shedding, but my dermatologist assured me it was normal. Now, my hair loss has completely stopped, and I have noticeable regrowth on my crown. The peace of mind is worth it.” – Mark T.
- “The clinical data for finasteride 1mg is robust and undeniable. It is a highly effective anti-androgen for the specific purpose of treating male pattern hair loss. Patient counseling on the rare but serious risk of persistent sexual side effects is an absolute necessity before initiation.” – Clinical Pharmacist Review
- “I experienced side effects (low libido) after about a year, so I discontinued use under my doctor’s guidance. They subsided after stopping. It didn’t work for me personally, but I appreciate that it’s a well-researched option.” – User_Review_102
