Bactroban Ointment 5g: Effective Topical Antibiotic Treatment

Bactroban Ointment 5g contains mupirocin 2% w/w as the active ingredient, a potent antibiotic specifically formulated for topical application. It is indicated for the treatment of superficial bacterial skin infections, such as impetigo, folliculitis, and other primary or secondary infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This prescription medication works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, effectively eliminating pathogens at the site of infection. Proper application as directed can lead to rapid resolution of symptoms and reduced risk of complications or spread.

Features

  • Contains mupirocin 2% w/w in a polyethylene glycol base
  • Available in a 5g tube for convenient, hygienic application
  • Specifically formulated for topical use on skin
  • Effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA in some cases
  • White, opaque, and soft consistency for easy spreading

Benefits

  • Rapidly targets and eliminates bacteria at the infection site
  • Reduces redness, swelling, pain, and discharge associated with skin infections
  • Helps prevent the spread of infection to other areas or individuals
  • Minimizes risk of infection-related complications when used appropriately
  • Convenient topical formulation avoids systemic antibiotic side effects
  • Supports faster healing and restoration of healthy skin integrity

Common use

Bactroban Ointment is commonly prescribed for primary skin infections such as impetigo (a contagious infection often around the nose and mouth characterized by honey-colored crusts), as well as secondary infected traumatic lesions, folliculitis, and other minor bacterial skin infections. It may also be used in the eradication of nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), though a nasal formulation is also available specifically for that purpose.

Dosage and direction

Apply a small amount of Bactroban Ointment to the affected area three times daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional. The area may be covered with a gauze dressing if desired. Wash hands before and after application unless the hands are the treated area. Treatment typically continues for up to 10 days. Do not use for longer than prescribed. If no improvement is seen within 3–5 days, re-evaluation by a physician is recommended.

Precautions

  • For external use only; avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or other mucous membranes.
  • Do not use on large open wounds, burns, or extensive areas of skin without medical supervision.
  • Use with caution in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment.
  • Discontinue use if sensitization or severe local irritation occurs.
  • Not for ophthalmic, intranasal (unless specified), or intravaginal use.
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi.

Contraindications

Bactroban Ontment is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any other component of the formulation. It should not be used in individuals who have exhibited allergic reactions to other topical antibiotics or excipients present in the ointment base.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include burning, stinging, pain, itching, or redness at the application site. Less frequently, patients may experience nausea, dry skin, or contact dermatitis. Rarely, more severe reactions such as angioedema or anaphylaxis may occur. If any severe or persistent side effects are experienced, discontinue use and seek medical attention.

Drug interaction

No significant systemic drug interactions have been reported due to minimal absorption. However, concurrent use with other topical products (e.g., corticosteroids, other antimicrobials) on the same area should only be undertaken under medical supervision to avoid potential incompatibility or reduced efficacy.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to catch up. Resume the regular dosing schedule. Consistency supports optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. However, accidental ingestion may lead to systemic effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice or contact a poison control center. For topical overapplication, remove excess ointment and monitor for local irritation.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Keep the tube tightly closed and away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused product after the treatment course is completed; do not save for future use.
